How do you grapple in the smackdown vs raw 2008 demo?

How do you graple in the smackdown vs raw 2008 demo?

lol i cant figure it out! the controls are so diffrent and you cant change them lol so can someone help me out? and they dont have a tutorial

And yes the demo has came out you have to go to game stop and reserve the game and they will give you the demo for Xbox 360

How do you grapple in the smackdown vs raw 2008 demo?
I don't know but thanks a lot for mentioning on how to get the demo!!!

Edit: I got the demo today. You hold the Right Bumper button to do the strong grapple. It's similar to SvR 2007 in some ways. But, from what I've figured out, only the left and right strong grapples trigger the Ultimate Control moves. In the end, if you've play SvR 2007, it's almost the same in this game.

Does Judo depend on the Gi for takedowns?

I really like Judo, but I noticed that a lot of the takedowns are based on the Gi. I do NO Gi submission grappling( BJJ, JKD, Wrestling) and I have grappled some Judo guys. I noticed that they kept trying to use my shirt in there takedown attempts, but my shirt would just rip so I would end up taking them down with a double leg takedown. For some reason the single and double leg takedowns seem to present themselves against the Judo guys I grappled.

Personally I am starting to believe wrestling has the best takedowns for NO Gi grappling.

If you believe I am wrong please explain why? But lets keep the name calling out of it! Instead win me over by giving me valid points!

Does Judo depend on the Gi for takedowns?
I would agree that wrestling take downs are normally most effective and Judo relies heavily on the GI. However, when employing a wrestling take down against an opponent who is familiar with Judo/ Jiu Jitsu technique you need to avoid the choke; because it is often available to your opponent who you are trying to use the single or double leg take down against.
Reply:to the person above, if the person keeps their head in a correct position according to wrestling technique a choke is impossible, however many lower level people do not.

as to judo relying on the gi the best way I have heard it said is this "2/3 of judo takedowns can be performed without the gi, but you take away 3/4 of the ways to do them"

yes wrestling does have the best takedowns because, everything as far as takedowns in judo is legal in wrestling, they just don't work often, singles and doubles, while not usually flashy or cool looking(though some doubles are quite impressive) are much more relible, high percentage takedowns.
Reply:You really need to work on using the body grips if you want to use your judo throws. You can use the wrist like you were grabbing the sleeve of the gi. You can also brab the back of their head. I like to pummel and fit one of my arms under the arm pit around there back it gives me a feel similar to Gi.

I think you just need to practice alot. Look at Karo Parsian he always seems to win the takedowns.

Another thing without a Gi you need to be more conscious of level changes. The wrestlers will hit you every time if you stay high and they go low. In Judo it isn't as important because you can use the gi to stop there momentum more easily.
Reply:All the points are valid but a good judo guy should be able to adapt quickly to no gi.The throws use the same concepts of balance and execution, many have the same throwing 'shape' and that's 80% of the hard work. It's just a matter of learning the new grip, or lack of it :)
Reply:Some Judo takedowns do depend on the gi, but many can also be adapted relatively easily to a no-gi situation. For example, Koshi Gurama can be done using the gi, but the only adaptation needed to transistion to a no-gi situation is to grab the wrist of your opponent instead of the sleeve. Koshi Gurama uses a headlock in its basic form for the other hand and you can use the same grip in both a gi and a no-gi situation. Osoto Gari, Ippon seoi nage, and several others can be easily adapted to a no-gi situation.

It seems like the Judo guys you are facing in those grappling tournaments haven't put enough work into their no-gi training. It's not the style in this case, but the artist.

The Double Leg takedown is a valid Judo throw by the way. It is called Morote Gari, or Double Arm Reap.
Reply:First of all the gi is essential for Judo for both safety and to establish a non-lethal grip (as compared to Ju-jutsu which grabs the arms for the purpose of breaking). Ju-do is the humane form of Ju-jitsu.

Judo emphasizes 'throwing' (not take downs). There are real big differences between a wrestling take-down, and a Judo throw. One of the main reasons Judo is not wrestling or grappling. It really is a mistake to call Judo grappling or wrestling.

Trips, take-downs, knock-downs, and dashing down are really not Judo.

How do you grapple because i dont get the whole thing? what hooks it to the ring the a or the swinging?

Your question doesn't make any sense.

How do you grapple because i dont get the whole thing? what hooks it to the ring the a or the swinging?
This is an advanced style of wrestling.
Reply:That makes no sense.

Therefore the answer is Chuck Norris.
Reply:i do submission grappling it is alot of hard work you need to think how to go about things grappling isn't easy by far but it is like wrestling but a little faster paced
Reply:Another classic example of why some girls shouldnt be asking sports questions I agree with the guy above

the answer is CHuck Norris
Reply:I'm afraid you may have the wrong idea about what Grappling is. Grappelling uses your arms and legs to get your opponent into a complex system of holds or "joint locks" to effectively hold them.

Grappling is basicly wrestling, but not like "professional" Wrestling, ground fighting as it is sometimes also referred to is often based on submitting your opponent through positioning yourself so that you can apply the techniques that can hinder your opponent (if applied properly) causing them pain or discomfort which is often called pain compliance. often the pain can be so severe, it will cause the opponent to "tap out" which means they are submitting.

sometimes if they do not submit and continue to struggle against the technique, an injury can occur, such as broken bones, or dislocating joints in the body (such as the shouder)

these techniques can wear an opponent (if they happen to manage to get themselves out of the technique) down over a short period of time or even completely incompacitate them by knocking them unconscience.

techniques that can render an opponent unconscience are known as blood chokes which means you can use your arms and/or legs to wrap around the opponents neck cutting off the blood flow (via the carotid and perotid arteries, located on either side of the neck) to the head/brain area.

without fresh blood flow to the brain the body passes out. thus they are no longer able to defend themselves.

so grappling is fighting by using your body in a completely different manner than punching or kicking

When it comes to verga and grapple rain & snow that don't hit the ground is all grapple once verga?

what differentiates one from another and how can you tell if it never hits the ground?

When it comes to verga and grapple rain %26amp; snow that don't hit the ground is all grapple once verga?
If it's virga, it NEVER reaches the ground. It evaporates before reaching the ground. You can't always tell for sure that it didn't reach the ground, but if it looks like it's evaporating 8000 feet above the ground, it probably is. Or, maybe you can see it right over your head, and no raindrops are hitting the ground around you.

There's no connection, per se, between virga and grapple. The former describes the behavior of the precipitation, and the latter describes it's characteristics. Virga can be snowflakes, grapple or rain.

Bonus info!: Virga is good at creating microbursts.

IFL or WCL?

I just finished watching both and they're both exciting. However the WCL (World Combat League) has absolutely no grappling and the Honorable Chuck Norris has said, "People want knock outs, not tap outs"...I'm not so sure Chuck. The IFL (Int'l Fighting League) is pure MMA with striking and grappling, and that's what I prefer. Martial arts as a whole are limited when you leave out key aspects to fighting. be it striking, grappling, footwork, conditioning, etc. So I'm wondering: Who likes which one better...and why? This isn't 'striking vs grappling', but a genuine question as to what you think is more entertaining. Is is just striking? Or a mix of striking and grappling? Or grappling?

IFL or WCL?
I like them both. Most I watch UFC, Pride Fighting, and WCL. IFL is all right but I have no time to watch it. WCL have a women's division in each team. I want to be a future WCL fighter one day.

Also like Legends Lara can swing on ropes and her grapple. To swing on the

grapple jump towards a ring and shoot the grapple at it. You can swing back

and forth on it (you don't need to press back, just forward) and can also

climb up and down the rope, turn around on it, and jump from it. Lara also has

the new ability to run along the wall using her grapple. It's initiated by

jumping towards rings on walls and shooting the grapple at t. Use the 'up' and

'down' buttons to make her run back and forth and the directional buttons

along with the 'jump' button for her to get off (pressing left or right will

make her jump off the wall in that direction).

Batman's grapple hook...is it possible.?
Yes, Batman is super rich and has access to all the latest and greatest technology. But the motor does exist and the encasing does as well. Batman trains, says his prayers and takes his steroids, so you know he can handle it. The great thing about batman is that, unlike most superheroes, he's kind of realistic; that's his appeal.

Grapple Apples?

I bought some 'Grapples' at Wal-Mart and they taste really good! On the box thing it said that it 'Looks Like an Apple and Tastes Like a Grape', thats not really true though. However they are VERY sweet and crunchy and I was just wondering exactly what kind of apples are they?

They have a very bright beautiful red bottom and at the top is orangey-yellow and slightly greenish at the stem. Overall it is small and very round in size. Any guesses on what they are?

What martal art conditions the wepons of the body, strikes vital points, has a good ground and grapple?defence?
A good mix is hard to find, wing tsun is a good choice, but you have to find a good school. Another good choice is a school where they teach MMA. I'd also try freestyle karate, as they teach you standing and grappling. I like Shidokan karate alot, they train kyokushen karate striking, muay thai, and grappling, it's called the triathlon of martial arts, and it was founded by one of Mas Oyama's best pupils, as a matter fact the video game street fighter's main character (Ryu) is loosely based on this guy.

If you are going for one art, I'd go for one of those

wing tsun

freestyle karate

MMA

Shidokan Karate
Reply:Jiu-Jitsu sounds like what you're looking for. And they train through dojos and with regulated competition, so you wouldn't get pounded while on the ground (What does that prove anyway?)

Ninjutsu is a legitimate art, but I doubt you'll find many dojos that teach the genuine thing - it's got all these assassin and stealth techniques built into it.

Reply:I might be a bit biased as I teach Aikijujutsu, But I feel that Aikijujutsu might be what you are looking for. Good Aikijujutsu has a strong defense and avoidance techniques, fast and powerful striking, stand up grappling, throws, ground fighting, defenses against takedowns and plenty of breaks, real pressure points(not the crazy death touch stuff, just weak points), chokes/strangles, weapon defenses, etc..

I'll also second the other guy who answered just before me, Jujutsu of many types would also fit the bill and has a description similar to the aiki above, but a different feel.

By strong defense, I'm assuming you mean a good avoidance of damage. Other styles such as krav maga and muay thai fit the bill also, but tend to block and absorb a bit more damage than adjusting the range and avoiding the impact. depending on your mindset and body-type, they may also be of interest to you. You mention shotokan, Good shotokan might possibly fit what you are looking for, but it is hard to find, usually you'll get the watered down crap that passes for karate lately unless you are lucky.

Ninjutsu falls in above shotokan by a good margin but is in the same situation. Good if you can find a good school.

Good luck with your search.

Using compressed air had the disadvantage of being silent, other bidders almost universally preferring a gunpowder charge/flare which would attract the attention of the stricken sailor to the direction the line was coming from. It was Crappers belief however that the gunpowder charge was the component most likely to fail in the maritime environment, and indeed this had been the case with the previous model.

Effective Range: 30 yards horizontally/20 yards vertically

Is it silly to train in two different striking arts, even if you have a little bit of grappling training?

I'm not sure the best answer to support you since there is no context given for why you're concerned that it's silly. What is the reason for it? To be the best Martial artist you can or because two striking arts catch your interest, or something else? Sometimes less is more and focus on one can enable you to master, and sometimes the more tools in your toolbag make you better when you need them. Have fun!

Is it silly to train in two different striking arts, even if you have a little bit of grappling training?
Why would it be silly? Many martial arts practice multiple arts in multiple ranges.

Bas Rutten had the standup hand striking of a boxer, but he openly said that he prefers to use kyokushin kicks most of the time, which is what he did. His standup has Thai boxing, Kyokushin, TKD, and pancrase wrapped into one.

It depends on what you look for. You might take a move or two from one system, and take 14 from another. You have to constantly mixed things around. If you stick to one striking style: It's fine, but if you don't, then that's also fine.
Reply:Well its hard to learn Chinese in the monring then go learn French in the Afternoon !

I would try to stay in one Art, or some schools now have MMA classes. You don't want to go to too many schools in a day and get mixed teaching, it can be very frustrating. So, if you would like to learn Striking and Ground game then you should try to find ONE school with both :)
Reply:If one stresses using the hands and the other stresses kicking, it's not only NOT silly, but almost a necessary step if you want to do well in MMA.

Has any body done ninjutsu, if so explain what u use (more hands than leg, mostly grappling, or what).?

I've been a student within the Bujinkan for a hair over a decade now....

In terms of what we use? Well, everything.

Kosshijutsu - nerve, muscle, %26amp; arterial pathway attacking methods

Koppojutsu - bone, joint, and body structure attacking methods

Atemijutsu - striking, with the full range of body weapons (knees, elbows, hands, feet, shin, shoulders (for example, taiken or body movement strikes), head, etc.

Now, when it comes to atemijutsu, we don't have a preference on which weapon to use moreso than another, it all depends on the situation and what's needed.

Newaza- ground combat skills

Jutaijutsu - joint locks/breaks, throws, grappling, etc

Jimewaza - choking techniques

Now, I segmented the individual aspects of what we do so you could have a regimental understanding of certain things....but it's all surmised and combined within the system.

Collectively, it's called Taijutsu (body skills) and Taisabaki (body movement).

There's no one technique that's just grappling alone, or striking alone, or whatever alone...they're all intermixed. Different body movements on the part of both attacker and defender (and those lines are blurred....both ends are taught to think as both constantly while going through waza) create differing results even when the defense mindset is the same. We're taught to constantly improvise and use what's given to us.

Then, if you throw weapons into the mix..the same basic principles of angles, distances, physics, etc are the same.

Whether we're training armed, or unarmed, it's the same thing.

Just something to also add onto this, by no means is Ninjutsu the only focus of our system. Sure, we have ninpo in our curriculum through the Togakure ryu, Gyokushin ryu, and Kumokokure ryu lineages.....but the larger majority of the system is comprised of Samurai bujutsu techniques.

Even when looking at ninjutsu itself and solely by itself, a large amount of the principles through body mechanics are the same. The differences are within the fine points and subspecialties that ninpo had that it's bujutsu cousins didn't operate with.

And that's moreso in exclusive weaponry and tools, concealment tactics and so forth. The combat itself, is basically exactly the same.

Has any body done ninjutsu, if so explain what u use (more hands than leg, mostly grappling, or what).?
Mostly kicks, and strikes look into the history of ninjitsu it is a dark art that was sinister and used for evil back in the early 16 century,Ninpo is another word for Ninjutsu-The martial arts of Ninja (or Shinobi and not well known Kancho). Ninpo represents the larger scale of ninjutsu-The spiritual aspects (including Amatsu Tatara, spiritual refinement ect) and the Physical aspects (Taijutsu, Bikenjutsu, Sojutsu, Naginatajutsu ect). Collectively they are called Bumon and Shumon, and make up Ninpo. Ninpo translated as *Ninja law* would be incorrect, Ninpo actually translates as *Higher order of Nin*, *Higher order of Ninja* or *The way of Nin/Ninja* ect. The Nin simboll consists of uper radical and lower radical's, upper being Yaiba being a sword, lower being Kokoro/Shin being heart. A misconceptional translation of the word Nin would to put the blade over the heart which sounds sinister, but actually it represents preservance and endurance. Po consists of two radicals, the left radical being Sansui meaning water and Saru meaning to go fourth. Putting them together literally means water going forth but on a deeper scale implies the water cycle, and when Po is used in Ninpo, relates to the term Do used in many arts meaning The Way.
Reply:It's like a combination of every thing! They have a few techniques that are great for anti grapple situations! There specialty is to attack you with moves you never expect! Like a quick duck down strike counter! The wrist and shoulder strike are unique! Shoulder tackle is effective if not expected! There combinations in striking are the best I have seen! For example after they do a punch then they elbow then decide to do a back fist and elbow over and over or shoulder tackle to a throw or take down! The foot work is great! They will mostly side step in on you and try to knock you out! They don't do great on grappling and also don't fight well off there back! They will be like judo fighters! The ninjutsu is mostly kill moves! It's only a MMA of mostly all the effective Asian Arts! They tell you when you throw someone to follow through and not release! So you'll make them get an injury that will KO them or injure them! There art is intended for Medieval style of guerrilla war fare! Now it's alright but should be up dated for today's world! Stand up fighting is it's main focus! Allot of strikes like karate and a little bit of judo!
Reply:The system is called Taijutsu or something along that line. It is a mix of strikes, grapples, traps and such. Elbow strikes, hammer strikes, kicks, knees, punches, evasions, etc. are all used.

Keep in mind if you were Ninja, you used what worked best with the least amount of effort.

It is taught to be situational (by a good instructor).

Ninjutsu is a system, within that system are sets of skills, hand to hand is only one of them. I can't think of one school that teaches all of them or why they would.

Does anyone know where i can buy cheap tatami or puzzle mats for home grappling use?

Preferably for a size around 10ft. x 10ft. or a little bigger. Also does anyone know a place where I can buy mats secondhand. I live in Orange County, CA so if anyone knows a place around here or someone that woll ship mats here please tell me.

Does anyone know where i can buy cheap tatami or puzzle mats for home grappling use?
Reslite sells reconditioned wrestling mats for home use for about $500 for at 10x10. A puzzle mat of similar size is about $350. The puzzle mat is 1/2 the thickness.

Don't buy cheap mats. The difference in price between a good mat and a cheap one is much less than the cost of a broken bone from landing on a cheap mat.

How long does it a beginner at jeet kune do to learn grappling?

There is no set form for JKD. The amount of grappling you do will depend upon how well suited you are to being a grappler.

How long does it a beginner at jeet kune do to learn grappling?
That depends on the student and the teacher. Jeet Kun Do is the Tao of martial arts. The Tao says that you must be like water, finding your own way. You can not force water to go a way it doesn't want to go, but people try to force themseleves to go ways others want them to.

Jeet Kun Do is the same way, it will be different for everyone who practices it. If you punch well, you will punch more, if you kick well you will kick more, if you grapple well you will grapple more. Expect it to take at least a year before you are exposed to all parts of Jeet Kun Do basic moves. If you want to grapple, tell your sensei. How will he know if you don't say something?

Keep in mind that most schools that claim to teach Jeet Kun Do actually teach Wing Chun or Kung Fu with an eye to Bruce Lee's methods rather then true JKD. This is because when Bruce died he left only one man capable and authorized to teach JKD. That man refused to teach for several years out of mourning and fear that he'd not be worthy to teach Lee's art properly. He has since started training, but only two or three schools are actually recognized by the world JKD organization as official dojos. The rest are fakes or are trying to teach JKD but don't have a proper and authorized teacher in charge.

So unless you are studying in Hawaii or San Diego you are not at an official dojo of JKD. Only those schools have masters at them. this is why i don't take JKD. It would be my prefered art, but San Diego is 3 hours from me and I'm not moving just so I can take JKD. The dojos closest to me are fakes, I've watched their classes and they are Wing Chun and Southern Fist, not JKD. The only part that they teach that is JKD is the one-inch-punch.
Reply:jkd isn't really a martial art, it is more of a philosophy.

to my knowledge jkd schools don't generally teach grappling.
Reply:Grappling is a part of JKD, as it is included in the title of one of the more important books written about the art, called, ENTERING TO TRAPPING TO GRAPPLING, by Larry Hartsell (I believe) one of Bruce's original students. While Bruce Lee intended to include more groundfighting in the art, but died before he got around to it, it is in there. Can you out-ground fight a BJJ guy with it? Probably, not. But is there enough grappling technique in JKD to use successfully against a boxer, karateka, or other stand up fighter? Yes.

Should you really train in both Gi and No-Gi grappling?

Isn't it better to pick one or the other? How can you really expect to master both? Also don't the techniques get confusing when one works for Gi and one doesn't?

Should you really train in both Gi and No-Gi grappling?
Both are necessary. For self defense it is important to train in street cloths sometimes. You need to feel the difference. Street cloths are more restrictive and are harder to grab than most Gi. There is also a psychological thing that goes on sometimes in the fighters mind. I have seen some of my students hold back a little in their street cloths. The mind is a funny thing sometimes.
Reply:Definitely both are necessary!! I will not extrapolate for Frank gave you a good answer.
Reply:When I originally started training in BJJ under Carlson, it was expected that you would train some session with gi, some without. At that time they talked about fighting in 'Speedo's' rather than fight shorts. Basically BJJ has now become heavily gi oriented which I find disappointing. It used to be far more reality based but now it seems that if you are not wearing a gi/kimono it is MMA. It used to be no-gi.

My honest opinion is much of what is taught at BJJ schools these days is competition BJJ rather than the method/style taught back in the late 80's and early 90's when it was designed for the street, beach, etc. In my view, the no gi training was essential in making BJJ the art it became.

As far as how you can master it, it was taught in duplex where the instructor would say 'grab the sleeve or collar here. If he isn't wearing a kimono, hold him here or grab his wrist'. It worked the same when we worked without gi. We would be told to do it one way and if the opponent was wearing a gi, we could hold this or that. Sure, some techniques were made for the gi alone but there weren't that many.

Sadly, BJJ has become a shadow of what it was.
Reply:Absolutely you should train in both.

The principles aren't that hard to master, and aside from a few Gi chokes, nearly everything done with a Gi can be done without one by some small and simple modifications. In fact it is imperative in my opinion for you to do both, No Gi more so.

But wearing a Gi greatly increases your grip strength, makes you much easier to control (therefore learning much better defenses for positions and better ways to get out) as well as helping provide some solid fundamentals. It is much more technical with a Gi.

I promise you if you can avoid an armbar wearing a gi, avoiding an armbar without a Gi is MUCH easier. And because of those nuances in the amount of control you have, No Gi is very important. As a practitioner of both I can tell you it has helped incredibly.

Your Gi work helps your No Gi work greatly, as you are much more cognicent of bad positions, control points, etc. Your No Gi work helps you Gi work in your ability to not be hampered by Gi grips, or submissions requiring use of Gi.

The same as wearing a Gi helps you with escapes, not wearing a Gi helps you with control. If you can place a person in an armbar when they are wet, slippery, and you have to just use hand a wrist control, putting that same armbar on someone with a Gi is much easier and tighter.

If you can control and pin a guy by controlling a shoulder, hip, or using your bodyweight correctly, and not having that ability to use the Gi to hold them down, again your pins and controls WITH a Gi are even better.

They both compliment each other greatly.

Your Gi work helps you with defense, grip strength, conditioning, and fundamentals. Also gives you some options street wise with how to use clothing against an opponent.

Your No Gi works helps with your offense, controlling, use of body weight. Not to mention practical applications for MMA, or the street against a shirtless moron.

Just my experience.
Reply:Many people find that they prefer one over the other, but you should definitely train in both...for a number of reasons.

I train with both to prepare for simple practical application of skill. If you train in no-gi all the time, you are going to miss a lot of important details and grips that are available in a grappling situation when someone has more than just a t-shirt on. Vice-versa holds true too...if you train only with a gi, then have to use your skills in a situation where no one is wearing a jacket or pants, then you are going to wonder where all your grips went. Royler Gracie wrote that he usually trains with a gi because he feels it improves his technique, but when prepping for something like ADCC, he switches back to no-gi for about a month to get his mind used to the different grips available. I think most of the Brazilians are like that and consider the gi training most useful in developing the technical details of the game (maybe because it's a bit slower because of all the grips and you have a better chance of pulling off a clean technique).

There really isn't that much of a difference in most techniques between gi and no gi other than the grips (and the fact that your choices are more limited in no-gi than in gi because you can't do any chokes with the gi), but it's good to know the differences. And no, it's not much harder to do both...lots of people do. :)
Reply:I always thought it was important to learn both. Actually, have you heard of a man named 'Marcelo Garcia'? He is regarded by many in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Grappling community as the best pound for pound. He has a black belt in BJJ and Judo, and has won countless titles.

This is what he has to say about it, and I have proof with a link video down below.

"I train everyday with the gi, and once a week with no-gi. It's CRUCIAL to train with the gi, to have the finest technique. An athlete that wants to be good in no-gi, must train also with gi." - Marcelo Garcia
Reply:both are good to train by as you know street clothes will rip as the gi will not. you would have to refine the techniques just alittle bit to get the effect you want with a technique while in street clothes.and then alomst every takes there shirt off b4 getting into a fight. go as far as to train with out having a shirt on as well.
Reply:You are absolutely right, you should pick one or the other and once you have MASTERED the one then pick up the other. Only an advanced martial artist can differentiate between techniques in the heat of combat/competition, for this is an extremely difficult concept to learn. As a matter of principle my personal grappling training only involves non-gi or "plain clothes" grappling. I want to learn more street effective grappling techniques so I don't even bother with the Gi moves, I will learn them in class but then either adapt them for plain clothes or just not practise them at home. For instance, a collar choke is pretty effective with a lot of plain clothes items: t-shirt, dress shirt, jacket, etc. But a belt throw is rarely an effective move because regular belts rarely have enough grabbing room, and not a lot of men and very few women wear belts. So my personal suggestion would be to do the same thing, because the street defense aspect is the more important side of martial arts (IMO) and you can still compete without using Gi techniques if you so desire. By the way, I still learn Gi defensive techniques because they are important for both street and competition, (i've had guys grab my shirt, sleeve, or even pant legs, in fights before).

Happy Training!
Reply:For street, you need both. For sport, one or the other would be fine, but even then knowing both will you get you more points on either side.
Reply:Have you met many people who are good at No-Gi but suck at Gi? Probably, but have you ment many people that are good at Gi and suck at No-Gi? I bet the number is much fewer if not at all present

Whats the point of wearing a rash gaurd for grappling?

Rash guards are a great invention. They came originally from the space program but then made their way into sports via American Football.

They tend to have two uses in MMA/BJJ (and therefore other grappling/gi arts);

1. When worn under a kimono/gi they will stop you getting sore arm pits, neck, etc by acting as a barrier between the rough gi material and your skin. My company used to sell them and manufacture them and we also found that a lot of ladies wore them in preference to t-shirts under their uniforms. They looked better and held everything in place better than t-shirts.

2. When worn during MMA fights/practise they pull moisture (sweat) away from the body while allowing the air in. This allows your body to cool better than normal and warm up quicker. Compared to a t-shirt, they allow much less in the way of 'handles' (the ability for your opponent to grab your clothing to manipulate or restrict you). Additionally, they are tougher (well, good quality ones are!) than t-shirts and will last a lot longer.

On thing is for sure though, they need washing after each use. Those things with stale perspiration on them are TOXIC.

Also, they look pretty good providing you get a good quality one (such as Gameness, Sprawl, NoGi) just don't buy ones which have too much in the way of design images on as most will bleach out or peel off after a couple of washes.

Whats the point of wearing a rash gaurd for grappling?
Helps wick moisture away from the skin. Don't want to get a nasty rash training before a fight.
Reply:when you roll the mats cause abrasions on your skin. I tend to get them on my shoulders. If the mats aren't cleaned regularly bacteria from people sweating can cause staph infection. Rash guards help guard against this.
Reply:'cause it looks cool. ;]

What is the difference between wrestling and grappling ?

grappling and wrestling are basically the same thing. I guess you could say that grappling goes under the category of wrestling, and vice versa. In order to have a wrestling match, the beginning of the match when the two lock is called grappling, as is the whole time that they struggle against each other.

wrestling is a part of grappling because grappling is used in almost all types of fighting, with the exception being straight hitting, no holding boxing. MMA, jiu-jitsu and many other types of martial arts begin or contain with a form of grappling.

hope that helped.

Who deserves the real credit for adding grappling skills to American Kenpo?

Hey

Thats a good question. I am in American Kenpo also and Ive been to some grappling seminars and such but to who brought it to the orginazation? I do not know. In my early years of Kenpo 12-20 we had NO grappling, it was not until the last 15+ years that I have seen more and more grappling in Kenpo and other arts.

So it could have been several Masters in the system that worked together and created a format or each school has it methods dependant on teacher.

Sorry I cannot tell you who should get the credit. Maybe it was his Son Ed Jr? I once watched Speakman do a grappling technique and as much as I like the guy the technique was horrible lol.

I hope you find your answer, Ill check back here and see if you found one!!

Who deserves the real credit for adding grappling skills to American Kenpo?
i would have to say Ed Parker. that is the style i study.
Reply:I believe it was the Gracie's from Brazil.

It looked to me that everyone(styles) jumped on the band wagon to try these new "wrestling" moves , and incorporate them into their techniques.

Kenpo-ist are more ( such as myself) of a street fighting combat fighters.

I know I didn't answer exactly the question, but I hope I gave you an idea of your answer.
Reply:Our kempo school(New Zealand) has always taught take-down ,locks, holds.......fighting on the ground stuff, from when I started way back in 1985, but with our school it goes back to the 1950's because back them there were only to styles around..Kempo and Judo/Jujitsu , and the two schools held regular test so to say against each other.

But now-days i think it comes down to the popularity of the Gracie's and all the ground fighting that you see in all the competitions and alot of people seeing how effective it can be and Kenpo's natural ability to evolve and add extensions to techniques, have jumped on the band-waggon and have forged the two styles together.

I believe you cant solely credit one person to achieving this and id have to say it comes down to a multitude of people and factors.

Just to add..........

Id just like to point out that I'm not saying that the Gracie's put the grappling in Kenpo but they did make it popular and that some in Kenpo did pick up on it and added it to the American system, who I don't know!!

My school although in New Zealand was under the IKKA , and my teacher Robert Gemmell was a first generation Black Belt under Mr Parker, And at that stage was the only authority to teach his Kenpo in the pacific region.
Reply:There was NO grappling back in '67. It must have been added into the system by others after I left the States in '87.

What are some good exercises to improve grappling?

including everything, weights, kettlebells, cardio, muscles to place some emphasis on, stretching etc.

much love.

What are some good exercises to improve grappling?
Everyone is right here. My bjj gym does crossfit which is an awesome workout. There is nothing like experience though. In high school wrestling I wasn't the strongest or fastest but I won nearly all my matches because you had to kick me out of the gym.

technique, leverage, flexibility %26gt; brute strength, speed
Reply:Flexibility and strength are important aspects, but grappling is all about technique. To have good technique you need to truely understand all aspects of the sport--get a good coach.
Reply:I can not say this enough. SIT UPS. to be a good grappler you need good good core strength. you have to have good hips(wrestling term) to be able to maneuver yourself and your opponent. so sit ups will help tremendously
Reply:Isometric work to enable long lasting strength.
Reply:Basics are the best exercises. You would still be doing them even at your advanced stage.

Animal walks, isometric stretches, prawns/reverse, bridge etc. But all these exercises can't replace the fact that you need to know your control and submission.

If you think your basics are covered then you should be focusing on your grappling. You need to get a partner, Analyze a technique, Drill it till it sticks and Pressure Test it. John Will call it the "ADAPT" principle.

That way you can really say you own that move and you will see real substantial improvement, not just in fitness but in skill.

Judo or Aikido? (For Stand-up grappling)?

Both are good, Id worry more on finding a teacher of one or the other that is good and you can get too more so.

Try the classes out and you will know which one is for you!

good luck

Judo or Aikido? (For Stand-up grappling)?
Judo is far superior to Aikido in grappling...

(VERY biased opinion)

Judo works speed, setups, strength, and actually has competitions allowing the judoka to improve their skills. Aikido is more of a philosophy and operate using misdirection.

I respect Aikido but it simply is not nearly as effective at grappling.

Bottom line - Judo is simply more physically challenging and more realistic.
Reply:both arts are excellent. the problem is people are familiar with judo so they're going to say judo. as if you were to as which is better bjj or judo, most are going to say bjj (i prefer judo overall). if you looking for a good arts of the two look into aiki-jujitsu, combination of jujitso and aikido. i dont know the state that you are in but google/yahoo it.
Reply:If you talk about grappling, it is mostly on the ground...in which case, judo is best to use.

Aikido however, is efficient if the opponent is not so skilled in martial arts. It is mostly used for defense, disarming and nuetralizing an opponent.

Imagine if you are attacked by a person you know you can topple..it is overreacting if you put him to the ground and grapple using judo technique. Aikido can do the neutralizing in that case.

I agree with Niki D, Judo is strong. I say, Aikido is fluid.

I practice both. I discovered Judo is too much just for defense but Aikido is short of real technique for the ground.

Finger locking is useful for standup...it is practiced in aikido.
Reply:Man, that is a great screen name. I think I commented on that before...

Fingerlocking is great for standup? Seriously? Have you ever actually finger locked a live resisting opponent? Probably not, because you would realize that while you are working on his digits using one hand to control the other to lock, that you are missing a key component (a hand to protect your face from being hit).

There is no comparison for stand up grappling. Aikido is completely unrealistic. Certain styles are a bit more realistic, such as Tomiki, because they actually spar with full resistence and tend to have an idea of what works and what doesn't. Small joint manipulation isn't really effective until you have complete control of an opponent, and only then it works for pain compliance such as getting him to place his armbs behind his back.

But in reality, multi step, long circular throws that require different phases of direction do not work, even against unskilled people, because unskilled people do not follow. They do not allow you to move them all over the place, and they will pull away instead of remaining gripped.

Aikido doesn't work for a number of reasons. Number one, you have to be doing it for YEARS to acquire any real skill at it. Even after acquiring that skill against most people it will not be effective. MANY Aikido techniques REQUIRE complete cooperation between Uke and Tori. (Throwee and thrower perspectively). In reality most of the techniques were designed for wearing armor, and weilding a sword. So defenses against wrist grabs, and long circular throws were required. However, now a days you are not wearing armor, or weilding a sword. Opponents aren't trying to grab your wrist, they are trying to punch your face, and they aren't encumbered by armor, so long circular throws are very hard to pull off. You need short, fast, dynamic throws that place a person on his back with speed and intensity, with real kime. Otherwise he will resist and defend, and since you are not trained for that, you are pretty much stuck.

Judo trains with 100 percent resistance. They train at full speed, full instensity against resisting opponents who are also trying to throw them. They get to practice against total strangers in an adrenaline based situation in tournaments. Judo is constantly evolving, new throws developed, new ways of throwing developed, many many Judoka cross train in BJJ now, and enter No Gi grappling competetions. Hell there are plenty of Judo places that are training both with, and without Gi thanks to guys like Gokor.

Aikido you get magic pants, ineffective techniques that haven't changed in 100 years, and an art that requires your opponent to cooperate with you in order to pull off.

You want to know what works, look at what is out there and where there is success. U.S. Military Modern Army combatives, throws are Judo based. USMC MCMAP Program, throws are Judo based, ground techniques Sambo and BJJ based.

MMA: throws/takedowns Judo, Sambo, Wrestling based.

Krav Maga: Takedowns, throws, Judo and wrestling based. (Could be because Imi Lichtenfield also did wrestling)

Law Enforcement: Takedowns, Judo based, minimal pain compliance techniques Jujitsu based.

In nearly every aspect of effective range, grappling is primarily Judo based. Brazilian JiuJitsu was taught to Carlos Gracie by a Kodokan Gosen Judo based Judoka.

In every aspect where unnarmed fighting is tested, no one uses Aikido techniques. To me that speaks volumes.

But that is just my opinion, biased or not. I have a Dan ranking in Judo, and have reached Brown Belt in Tomiki Aikido. Even though I consider Tomiki to be more realistic, I still found it lacking in comparison to Judo. I did enjoy it, and the only reason I didn't stick with it was because the school moved and we no longer shared dojo space with them. However I enjoyed it, but did not find it incredibly realistic or effective, it is super fun for party tricks and putting pain compliance moves on drunk friends. However I wouldn't have, and have never used any of it in a real fight.

That is my opinion, take it for what it is worth.
Reply:I stand with what I've started with 10 years ago nl aikido. The first truth in aikido is also the fundamental truth when on the defensive: whatever comes get out of it's way. Aikido teaches you to handle an attack from a safe angle and process an attack without your opponent being able to get back at you. It's true that there's a lot of people that question the true effectiveness of aikido but I can only say that these people haven't really understood aikido. The basic techniques are external and indeed pretty unpractical at times. The thing you learn is to transform these techniques to their inner form and use as little technique as possible to handle your opponent. It's a process that takes years to master but a master of aikido is very hard to beat. (there's many stories of MA demo's where aikido masters beat various other MA and even when faced with multiple opponents). Oh BTW just as to react to the guy above. You should really try to follow a course with one of the aikido greats. What does a fighter do when he does not see, does not feel and thus does not know what is happenig untill he is subdued. Just try it and be amazed (I did and that's what has kept me going for the last 10 years) Aikido surprises the opponent and that's it's succes
Reply:judo definatly. i used to take aikido and jujitsu now aikijutsu and thaiboxing. aikido has only certain amoutns of techniques that will work. for instance standing joint locks arent very hard to pull off against a bumb on the street but when fighting an experienced judo fighter you cant do them because while you are working on your parrying they will find a way to put you on the ground. aikido just doent involve enough ground work. so from there on he will have you. both arts are fairly similar in that the use the oponents momentum against them aswell as using trips and throws, chokes and joint locks but judo is just more superior. stand up graplling isnt realy something ive come across maily because in grappling people will fall to the ground so therefore stnading up is only where grappling starts. but for taking people down judo will do the trick.

also think about this have you ever heard of an aikido fighter in mixed martial arts

Contact sports like boxing, wrestling, submission grappling/BJJ after rhinoplasty or nose surgery?

Hello. I am a boxer but also would consider doing MMA as alternative. I want to get cosmetic surgeyr on my nose, including narrowing the nose tip.

I want to know if I can ever:

1. get hit in the nose again

2. hit the matt nose-first again

3. get choked with an arm squeezing my nose

I read on various sites that you should "avoid contact sports for at least six months", but I think they were talking about football, tennis and I'm not sure if boxing or submission wrestling would count. Would it?

Has anyone here had surgery on their nose and later on partaken in sports where they get hit in the nose or get their nose squeezed or pushed hard? Please give details of this.

Thank you.

How much should I charge for grappling lessons?

Individual lessons and/or small group............. 32 male california

How much should I charge for grappling lessons?
Depends on several things, such as:

Your qualifications,

Your CERTIFICATIONS (a biggie),

Are you teaching an internationally recognized style,

The local demand for what you are teaching,

How good a teacher you are,

Overhead expenses,

What the competition is charging for similar lessons.

.
Reply:You might want to start out by teaching at the YMCA for cheap just to get yourself a following and to get some teaching experience. Report It

Reply:Several years ago I studied at an school run by Horian and Royce Gracie, classes were $50.00 per month BUT private lessons were $300.00 per hour. But that was Royce. How good you are can greatly appreciate people's willingness to pay a higher rate! Good Luck
Reply:In general classes are $50 to $80 a month unless they are private one on one lessons. Then it depends on what you value your time at. I usually charge $35 for a one hour private lesson. My students get their money's worth and I have had no complaints and many private lessons.
Reply:Individual lessons $75.00 mo. Two times a week

.small group $55.00 mo. .Two times a week
Reply:Please edit your question to include your certifications, belt levels (if any), martial arts experience and geographical area. We might be able to help you there.
Reply:Not one person so far has asked if you if you have

calculated your "Burden Rate".

This is "Business 101"!

This "And NOTHING Else", is how you arrive at an hourly

rate!

This takes less than 10 minutes and "Only You" have the figures to do the calculations.

"All" the other answers here so far are wrong.

Notice that they state "What THEY Charge" This is not an

answer to your question:"What should "I" charge"

Get a piece of paper, spend 10 minutes, and you will have your answer.
Reply:Well that is tough..

I take it you are Mr. Cox, the guy who Iha KO'd in 30 seconds of the 1st round in 2005?

A blue belt in BJJ I take it if you want to teach grappling.

Well, you can charge as much as you want but you might want to take a look around and base your price off availability. In Long Beach there are ton of great schools for BJJ and grappling. And the thing you always have to consider is the value of what you can teach. If some 10th Planet BJJ blue belt comes in and tools ya, then that obviously will affect your bottom line.

I would say 50 bucks a month for small groups, for someone of your caliber, even that is pressing it as someone can probably get trained for 70 bucks from a BJJ black belt in that area.

Privates go a lot higher, but that is usually because you are buying the time of someone who is worth it.

What was your amatuer record? I would probably advertise off that, and work on getting a little higher grade than blue belt, those are a dime a dozen. Not sure I would highlight a pro career of 0-1 with a 1st round loss as a credential.

Good luck with your endevour though!
Reply:As a blue belt you have to realize that yourself have a long road to learn, and some people might not be willing to pay alot due to the fact that blue wouldn't be considered advanced. Regardless, you don't need to be a black belt or a grandmaster in order to guide/teach people, but you must be humble about it for the reason stated above.

Usually instructors charge $55 to $70 for a private lesson, I'd suggest you charge $30 to $50 as to get new business, and the cost could be split amont the group (considering is small, maybe four, five people).

If you want to make decent moneny, you need a certificate, it'd be an investment.
Reply:Depends if u doin it on a regular bases or different days of the week for acouple hours at a time.
Reply:depends if you're trying to make a living on it or not. honestly, you're not a black or even brown belt. it also depends how many times a week you're putting into teaching. i would say $25-$50 if once a week, if any more than that, $50-$75. private lessons, that's to your disgression.

Should women wear cups for grappling like bjj?

yes. getting accidentally kneed on that area would still hurt even if u don't have balls.

Should women wear cups for grappling like bjj?
they would have to wear them on there anus.thats all the bjj boys would be trying to grab.
Reply:yes, getting hit there hurts maybe not as much as a guy, but still hurts. And to the first guy, you acnt grab an anus. The anus is the hole, past the rectum, the end of the large intestine.
Reply:Typically no. Coming from a girl. If you are getting hurt there than you may want to consider it. But honestly I don't.

Which martial arts focus on grappling, holding, and throwing rather than actually striking someone?
Krav Maga.

Its the Japanese martial art of using your opponents energy against him by harnessing his attacks energy in a defensive manner, i.e. grappling, holding, and throwing. No forward strikes are taught in this martial art.

Those are the ones I can remember. They are in no particular order.

Reply:judo and ju-jutsu and wrestling and aikido and sambo
Reply:Holy sheet, Krav Maga? TKD? Some people need to get educated.

Kung Fu listed of a good list.

I would say Judo, (much more so over JJ since JJ has only a little actual throws and grappling, it is based entirely differently and only has aspects... learn your Martial Arts people)

The main ones:

Judo

Brazilian JiuJitsu (mostly ground techniques, very limited takedowns)

Greco Roman and Freestyle wrestling

Sambo

Turkish Wrestling

(A few other ecletic ones, but not really worth mention, especially not Chin Na)

Look, straight up the only ones truly worth it are the ones that have constant randori and practice (sparring) ones in which you can fight to near 100 percent and train at realistically. Go through forms and practicing things on a compliant partner (i.e. Chin Na, JiuJitsu, Aikido) simply isn't realistic.

Judo, Wrestling (Freestyle, Folk, Greco) Catch Wrestling, Sambo, and No Gi Submission based wrestling are the best ways to go. You can go full out, you can spar many body types and even enter tournaments to test your skills under adrenaline based situations with a full resisting opponent to truly learn your skills.
Reply:Judo, jujutsu, brazilian jujutsu, aikido, hapkido, and wrestling.
Reply:try Brazillian Jujitsu
Reply:judo
Reply:AIKIDO will use the opponents force to allow you to take them down to control them

JUDO has some holds but it focusses on throws, sweeps exct.

most you can translate to the street.

SUBMISSION WRESTLING or shoot fighting has take downs and submissions and a million reversals

KRAV MAGA they do not go head hunting and although have a good concept can be OVERKILL.

JUJITSU is a GENTLE art thats what it translates to its non agressive so its not good if you are being attacked. it does have submissions but usualy done with a GI

TKD flashy more of an artistic style... sorry.
Reply:we take a minor fields clas to go with our taekwondo thats called HanMuDo, which is mainly that
Reply:Judo (Newaza), Jiu Jitsu, Ju Jitsu, Sambo, Greco Wrestling, Submission Wrestling.
Reply:I have been doing brazilian jiu jitsu and we learn ,striking, grappeling, wresteling, kicking and more. I think it depends on what your instructors have to offer.

Are there any solo grappling drills?

like for when you don't have anyone around to work with, there any moves or anything at all you can drill solo?

Are there any solo grappling drills?
You can practice "shrimping" where you start out on your back and then quickly curl to a fetal position and into a superior position. It is a good drill to build speed in grappling.
Reply:Sure. There is a great crunch/choke drill that I know of. Do you know circle cruches AKA grappling crunches, where you put your hands behind your head, lock your ankles, and pivot your midsection?

Well, now instead of keeping your ankles locked, have them locked, do the crunch, unlock them and lock into a triangle choke. So it wil be crunch, choke. Crunch, choke.
Reply:yeah... it's called KATA.
Reply:First off it isn't Kata, which are useless by the way.

If you want to practice solo drills of grappling moves you can, they wont really give you a great feel for the move, but if you know the move and are just working your side of the action I guess it's better than nothing. Just do the move as if your doing it on someone. It'll work with just about any move, I'd guess. I don't think that it is better than working with someone but not everyone has someone to work with. Focus on imagination, place an opponent in the mix with you and the execute. Don't start creating some massive "kata", as a training tool for real use they have none. (of course that is my view) To make "kata" of grappling moves, in my view, is taking away and belittling them as an effect and real combat tool. There is a great diff. from creating a series of moves on pretend opponents (kata) and working on a grappling or any move and doing it solo. Maybe to some it is the same thing but a kata is a set pre-arranged set of moves as solo training is not doing a kata.

Should MMA or submission grappling like Abu Dabi be Olympic sports?

I would be for that. The problem is why would you want to get knocked out for a dumb medal? MMA gets pretty violent, I don't see how they would want to risk injury just for nationalism, but I could be wrong. I'm for amateur fighters in the Olympics if any. That would be great seeing a American vs Brazilian in a final or Japan Vs. Russia, that would be cool.

Should MMA or submission grappling like Abu Dabi be Olympic sports?
sure, why not? other than the olympics are starting to get mighty lengthy
Reply:Yea, They can put it in place of Grecco Roman Wrestling. Who really does that?
Reply:I would like it to be but I think it cant be because MMA is still evolving. I think that when you have a mixed art its harder to judge

or to prepare for. when it reaches its apex and they have incorporated all that they can I would say yes... please do.

I want to learn grappling and striking in martial arts, and also weapons. what should I take?

I'm thinking about taking judo and kung fu or karate or even hapkido.

I want to learn grappling and striking in martial arts, and also weapons. what should I take?
I've taken Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do. Hap Ki Do has a lot of grappling/wrestling/bring the other guy down move typa things. I don't know about judo or kung fu but taekwondo was more kicking/punching/form, we did do board breaking though and weapons but barely if any grappling. Hapkido does weapons too, and striking but yeah a lot more focus on grappling techniques. Oh and be prepared to wait a while to start learning how to use weapons. Most places won't teach you weapons until you're a higher level, they won't let you at the beginning, usually around green belt is when they'll let you.

So I'd say hapkido, it has all the things you're looking for, grappling, striking, and weapons.
Reply:Kravmaga
Reply:SERRADA
Reply:I suggest wrestling.
Reply:for striking, you can learn muay thai, kickboxing, combat savate

for grappling, judo Japanese ju jitsu, aikido, wrestling would be good

if you desire both in a single martial art, you should seek sanda (Chinese free boxing style) its a combination of striking and partially wrestling

for weapons training, you can practice wu-shu, or preferably escirma
Reply:Judo is mainly grappling and no weapons.

Karate normally is just striking and weapons.

Kung fu Chinese version of karate with weapons. There are many forms under the umbrella of kung fu some may include some grappling.

Hapkido mostly grappling with some strikes

Jujitsu (Japanese) strikes, grappling, and weapons.

Shorin ryu ( Okinawan style karate) strikes, take downs, and weapons.
Reply:Krav maga
Reply:I'd think --out of those three martial arts-- that Hapkido would be your best bet, since you'd get experience in striking and some grappling.

One of my Taekwondo instructors taught us some Hapkido...it didn't take us long (even those in the class who were 100% new to martial arts) to learn how to use some of those joint-locks.

And I love how only a few techniques can be used to defend against attacks --unlike how some other martial arts are taught (I'd rather learn one escape for different types of holds, than many types of escapes for one hold. )

I also think Hapkido has some weapons (and pratical ones, too, like the cane/walking stick) .

Although, some styles of karate have a good mix of striking/grappling/weapons...it depends on the style and dojo you go to.

Still, I'd advise trying out Hapkido first...then when you've got good experience in that, you can get more into grappling in judo or go into kung-fu or karate to get some weapons training (although you probably won't train with weapons in any of those styles for awhile)
Reply:simple: BJJ %26amp; muay thai are the most effective
