Best self defense/martial arts for real life?

I'm going to some third world countries, and I bartend in a pretty ghetto bar where fights happen alot. What's the most effective martial arts for modern day application. I don't want to learn how to defend against ninja weapons. I don't think wrestling/grappling is good if a guy has six friends who are kicking me when I'm down. If someone comes at me with a gun, knife, bat, or fist, which martial arts teaches how to defend quickly and efficiently before more trouble shows? I've heard alot about the Isreali body guard class, can't remember what it's called. Anyone? Thanks.

Reply:You're talking about Krav Maga. Very, very effective. But what if the fight goes to the ground? You really need to practice several martial arts. I practice kajukenbo, a mixed martial arts out of Hawaii. It's effective b/c I train in stand up, take downs, escapes, and ground fighting. Although, it's not enough. I also added weapons defense, submissions, and filipino stick fighting. I've done different forms in the past including muy thai. It's really the only way to go. But it's a long and difficult road.

Otherwise, buy a gun.
Reply:The israeli haganah or krav maga are good as well as russian Systema. Avoid karate, tkd, ect as they are not really based in reality.

The thing about grappling and wrestling are that most fights end up on the ground. So you should know some wrestling and grappling. Nothing fancy just how to go from the guard to a lock to standing. How to maintain your standing position with dirty boxing and leverage.

Ok this is the important part... NEVER FIGHT A KNIFE. You can be bruce lee on sterioids with ninja training and you will always get cut. Run from a knife its not worth getting stabbed over.

A good kife fighter will stab you and be walking down the street before you notice it.

In a bar fight its should always be 2 on one. And this is how you do it. You use clocking, one of you stays on his 6 and gets his attention while the other is on his 12 from behind ready to toss him out the door or knock him down. Ever see the raptors from jurasic park the movie, thats what you want in a real life bar fight.
Reply:since you already have studied krav maga, you might want to try something that has "ground game" because a lot of fights will go to the ground.

If your opponent has more than one friend keep them from getting behind you for a take down. do as much dammage as possible and get away,

also if you have one of them you can use him as a shield of sorts to tie up the rest of them to give you some time, but you have to be quick. but get away at the first opportunity against 2-3 or more people. and above all, anywhere you go, watch your back
Reply:There is no best martial art only there are martial arts that work better for you, since you are concerned against numbers I would suggest you give Aikido a try it is intended to work pretty well against multiple opponents.

and the name of the Israeli style of combat is krav maga
Reply:Regardless of size, strength, and fitness level, anyone can master the essentials of Krav Maga, and reap the rewards of increased safety, confidence, and conditioning. With moves you can learn in as little as five minutes, or practice for long-term success, Krav Maga will show you how to:

Protect your body's vulnerable targerts

Use an opponent's momentum to fuel your counterattack

Escape from grips and holds

Combine punches, kicks, knees and elbows

Increase your core strength

Improve muscle tone

Krav Maga

No wasted time doing Kata's, you will wear protective gear and strike, punch, throw, and kick fellow students in "real world" situations. Your instructor will look at your natural abilities and enable you to use them against your opponents.

With your job and the locations you will encounter multiple threats mostly armed with knives or sticks. Krav Maga will teach you how to react, without hesitation, and be able to....win!

Welcome to being a Kravist (A person studying Krav Maga)
Reply:What? Even if you fight standup, six of his friends can alway gang up on you and knock you down and kick you while you're down. It's not like in movie where people take turn to attack. They all will go right at you. Absolutely NO style will help you! So your best bet is to learn their lanaguage, be humble, learn their culture, don't dress flashy or show off about anything. beside that I think knowing how to fight will make things worse because in other countires, especially third country, they usually are very baised. So if you get in fight, the polices will usually believe their people while ignoring you and toss you in prison.

I can write a book on this but... basically it's better to NOT get in any fight and don't have much on you or wear expensive clothes and they will not have many reason to attack you.
Reply:Krav Maga for a general over all rounding

Boxing for striking and to effectively protect yourself

Jiu Jitsu for breaking an arm and ending a fight immediately or if you need to take someone down
Reply:Krav Maga.
Reply:I agree that Aikido would be a great choice, but I study Aikido. This is the third art for me, and I find they all offer a great deal. The fact is your only as good as your instruction and dedication.

Aikido includes non-destructive or destructive joint manipulation that works great in the tight confines of a bar or club, weapons defense against knives and guns (run!!), as well as a great deal of practice against multiple attackers (Randori). You'll also get so much more from a spiritual standpoint. You'll learn to control situations so you don't NEED to act. See www.aikidofaq.com for more info.
Reply:Find a nearby martial arts school and ask to see some of there self defense, if it looks stupid dont bother. Make sure they deal with the attacker and not just getting away. If the stuff they do looks like b.s. it is b.s. I would recommend maybe visiting a nearby college, and talking to the teacher there. I taught a self-defense class at a college when I was 16 and would have been happy to help somebody.
