Why do some people fawn weakness or humbleness?

I know this one guy that is a 8th degree black belt in kenpo as well as pancration (really old school grappling) ,he's pretty ripped and buff but always wears big clothes so you can't really tell.I always thought he was just some dork but when we were at a bar and some guys were picking on a girl,my friend intervined and ended up beating up all three guys with only a few hits, then they ran. Most of the time he is this quiet, anxious and seemingly insecure person. Is it really a ploy? or is it just because she is a master martial artist doesn't mean that he may have other issues? It's just intriguing to me,you'd never think someone like that could kick so much butt lol.

Why do some people fawn weakness or humbleness?
Wow. First of all, that's really cool.

But martial artists are supposed to have huge self-confidence....

humble, but with confidence.

Maybe he has an emotional weakness from family that gives him the "shy dorky" quality.
Reply:I'm guessing that you have your own preconceived view of how a martial arts master should behave.Just because someone is quiet and dorky in no way means that they couldn't destroy you in a fight.I've noticed that in most cases the person that looks really tough, the one that no one wants to fight because of how they look, those are the ones that would be demolished in a real fight.

People that know that they are excellent fighters don't need to put on the persona of a tough guy because they don't need it.
