To BJJ practitioners, how effective do you believe BJJ is against more than 1 attacker?

Please note that this is a serious question not a dig at BJJ or any other grappling/ground fighting style. I have very limited experience with BJJ as I am mostly a stand up fighter but I do enjoy employing locks and takedowns in my fighting.

I was just wondering if your school teaches this kind of self defence situation and if so how they teach you to deal with it as I can't really think of a way to grapple more than one person at a time but as I said I'm not a grappling expert.

To be honest, it's not very effective against multiple opponents. Since a lot of the moves in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are counters and based to your opponents reactions, it can get pretty time consuming to put your opponent in the position you want him in order to pull-off a submission/choke. In a multiple opponent situation, there really is no time to lose. For instance, if you're pulling full-guard on an attacker and working toward taking his back, there is nothing stopping another attacker from delivering a swift boot or stomp to your completely open face.

I practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and use it for MMA purposes. In a one-on-one situation, it is amazing and I will stand by it. However, against multiple opponents I can't vouch for it being very effective as your ONLY martial art in your defensive arsenal. You'd be much better off coupling it with a more pressure-point/dirty fighting based Martial Art.
Reply:BJJ is awesome with one fighter, but one of the things about it that has always troubled me is that it's almost useless against two. I think some kind of stand-up fighting would be most useful against two.
Reply:Not sure but Chuck Norris can take out 100 attackers with the fist that is under his beard.

Points Baby!!!
Reply:honest opinion?it can help you get back to your feet if your taken to the ground but it is not a good style for fighting or defending multiple oponents.a good stand up style as a base such as freestyle karate and crosstrain in muay thai and bjj or another grappling/ground fighting style later on is the best way to go.you should be able to defend yourself in most situations with these.the last place you want to be in a real situation is the ground especially with multiple opponents.the biggest problem is most ppl think a real situation is defending themselves from an angry girl guide for not paying for a packet of biscuits, and then theres the know it all experts that cant be told anythying and think bjj is the be all and end all of ma.you cant teach common sense and you cant put brains in a monument.

i can fight on the ground or stand up but prefer to do neither,if you break major bones it tends to end things very quickly?
