Why isn't there more groin shots in the UFC, Do they always wear cups?

I'm sort of surprised that there isn't more accidental/intentional groin shots, what with all the leg kicking and close grappling. A boxing coach that I work with actually recommends "low blows" as a method to turn around a fight if his guy is losing.

Groin shots are now illegal in the UFC, but they used to be open game. See Keith Hackney vs Joe Son, UFC 4, Revenge of the Warriors. This was parodied in one of the Austin Powers movies where Joe Son plays "Random Task" and is defeated at the end by Austin's Swedish made enlarger.





Yes, cups are required. If you watch a fighter entering the octagon, the ref will ask a series of questions and you can see the fighter adjust his trunks affirming that he is wearing a cup.
Reply:because its against the rules and these ufc guys have alot of respect for eachother plus theres only 3 rounds and you get a point taken away from you if you low blow 1 point is alot of points in a 3 round fight
Reply:intentional groin shots in mma are illegal and a fighter caught doing that will either wise be deducted points from his score or possibly even be dq'd for it, as far as I know cups are required to be worn by all fighters, I don't believe that is optional, and as far as your coach recommending it, well, you might want to get a new coach if you want to go anywhere in the world of mma, or stick to illegal underground fights.......
