I'm 25, and want to get back into the martial arts scene.?

I took Taekwondo about 15 yrs ago, but the dojo closed and I didn't bother to find a new one. So, now I would like to get back into the scene, but Taekwondo doesn't really do anything for me. Any suggestions for holds or grappling styles? Also, I was wondering about the seiousness of practicing? How intense can the sparring be in training? I have to maintain a preofessional look for work :)

If you choose a grappling art you can basically go 100% in sparring. I practice jujitsu, and really enjoy it. It focuses on ground fighting, but my school does stand up, too. I also have to maintain a professional look at work, and usually it isn't a problem with jujitsu. MMA is a different story...

The seriousness of practicing will vary from school to school, so make sure you check a couple out to make sure it's what you're looking for.

Good luck!
Reply:Ever Consider Judo?
Reply:It's intense as you want to make it. How bad do you want it?
Reply:Amigo, if you go train like an athlete, expect a shiner, or a busted lip once in a while, and thats just sticking to grappling. It happens. If that is unacceptable there is always golf or aikido.
Reply:Check out the schools in your area and talk with the instructor/s at each location. Watch a few of the classes you'll participate in if you join and chat with the students. You'll be able to figure out for yourself which one would best suit what you are looking for right now.

If you take the time to look, you may find a few schools and instructors that appeal to your new interest in re-engaging with the martial arts. Don't limit yourself necessarily to any particular style or concept right now, just find out what is readily available at the cost, times, and locations that work for you and choose accordingly.

Good luck,
