Is Judo and BJJ very similiar?

Some uneducated people don't realize that Judo and BJJ are very similiar! BOTH styles are based on Submission Grappling! BOTH styles use a lot of joint locks and chokes. The only difference is that Judo is far better at takedowns then BJJ is. And of course the technique names are different!

What is your opinion?

Is Judo and BJJ very similiar?
I did BJJ for 3 months before I had to move, and we were taught a lot of judo moves as well, there might be slight variations in them but they're pretty much the same :) I %26lt;3 it!
Reply:Well according to some internet historical accounts BJJ was founded from Judo. BJJ was just modified later on. So then the answer would be a resounding YES. Since one did come from the other.
Reply:Jui-Jitsu was derived from Judo but it focuses more on the ground fighting. While Judo does teach ground fighting as well, it is renowned for its throws and take downs, which Brazilian Jui-Jitsu does not focus on.
Reply:Judo's newaza is similar to BJJ. BJJ originated from Judo, Count Maeda taught Judo to the Gracies and they evolved it in to what BJJ is today. Judo deals with many more throws and BJJ has more emphasis on the ground game. I would say from experience that BJJ's ground game is far superior to most Judo styles newaza. Kosen Judo has the best ground game of the diferent styles of Judo.
Reply:The guy who brought BJJ to Brazil was a master of Judo. Judo and BJJ have a lot of the same moves, but their emphasis in each is different.
Reply:Agree

Similar - yes. the same - no. BJJ was developed from judo.
Reply:Judo covers more standing grappling, BJJ covers more ground grappling, but yes, they are very similar.
Reply:Japanese JJ was des. to take down armored samurai. Once down w heavy armor, they would lose a fight, Judo came from this and took prominence in Japan. Some Japanese moved to Brazil and taught, JJ was adapted to be a take down and submit art. So yes although they changed in different places, much is the same bet the two. .
Reply:Actually, you could argue that BJJ is a form of Judo. The Gracies developed BJJ after being taught Judo by a Sensei from Japan. Other than that, the only differences are the rules in sport settings with regards to grips (for example, it is illegal in Judo to put your fingers inside your opponent's sleeve), the emphasis on throws and takedown in Judo compared to the matwork emphasis in BJJ, and the names.
Reply:yeah they are similar
Reply:Judo and JJ are more similar, BJJ uses much less throws, but the ground game is very specialized, neat, and effective.
Reply:BJJ is a service prostitutes provide just to let you know, not a martical arts style. Brazilian Judjitsu however is.
