What can I do if there arent any dojos around to learn from?

well actually there are but they dont teach what i want to learn... I went to both of them for a while, one for three years and one for five. the second one just broke off from the first one because the sensei there was being dishonest and stealing donation money so i followed them, but all they taught were punches and kicks, which i learned pretty quickly but i cant say i ever got them down good because we always used them in sparring and were never taught to add power to them. They never really taught any grappling though... i want to learn stuff like submissions and throws and groundfighting etc. but all they taught was traditional light-contact sparring, which one of the instructors admitted to me once was useless in real life combat. so now I'm not goin there anymore and i want a way to learn stuff like judo and jiu jitsu... no dojos for either around though. So anyone know what i can do? if you know how to check for dojos around an area, zip code is 49878

I know you think those punches and kicks were a waist of time but you have got to have a good foundation to get to the good part of anything. I can't tell you where to got because I am not from your area but after being in MA for a couple of years I can tell you that any good sensei is going to start you off with the fundamentals. If he doesn't I would beg you to look elsewhere. If you are looking to fight ...join a fightclub. IF you want real training find someone who is honest (sounds like a bad deal where you were) and don't underestimate the basics. You may learn them pretty quickly but I know 3rd degree black belts who still practice them daily.
Reply:Well I had to train with two friends in my garage with heavy bags and our own equipment, books and all resources we could find until FINALLY the day came along when a real Sensei moved in to our small town and i have been with him ever since, 4 years now and though i am not a BB in Goju I am testing for Brown.

Those few years in the basement though really were helpful. Sure we never called ourselves a Dojo, but we had the desire and the will to learn and the patience and now we finally have a teacher.

I'm sure one day again you will find that teacher you want. Until then train with some buddies or on your own practicing what you already know and trying to learn more if you can.
Reply:id suggest practicing with a friend.act out scenarios and see how its possible to break out of them.choke holds, bear hugs etc...also a way to become stronger and to take pain is hit the part of the body.i train my knuckles.i spontaeneously punch hard walls tables anything.this way when i punch somthing hard it doesnt hurt as much.also in my karate we do conditioning.we have to slap each other across the face.kick each other in the thigh..bodybuilding can also be useful in taking hits.hope this helped
