What are all of the different elements to fighting ?
There are basically 5 ranges of combat.
1. Extreme Long range: Guns, spears, etc.
2. Long range: Bats, pool cues, etc.
3. Short range: Kicks, punches.
4. Close range: Knees, elbows.
5. Grappling range: clinch, throw.
There are many elements within these ranges. If you can't fight within a certain range, you had best stay out of it. That is one of the primary weaknesses of pure grappling. A grappler has to get past the other 4 ranges in order to take down his opponent. A very skilled grappler can overcome this most times, but a very skilled striker has kicks, punches, knees, and elbows (assuming he doesn't also have a weapon). That's a lot of ammo to have to overcome.

now these are hand to hand, no weapon combat...
Reply:stand up, grappling, air, low(almost sitting), one legged is a serious one believe it or not in a fight you will end up on one leg if you can kick above the waist.

Reply:Look at the first answer, and add groundwork, and you have the basic areas of fighting distance wise, these are the circles around you for fighting as perscribed by aikido, and i agree with it. This is one way to look at fighting, you could also see it simpler, such as,
1-Guns or ranged weapons,
2 Melee weapons
3 free form fighting (striking)
4 The clinch
5 groundwork
Each catagory has it's own diverse background and nearly limitless ways of learning. In my mind these are the five basic types of fighting without going into detail and further subdividing them, that could take an extremely long time to do, if you do want a more in depth look, feel free to e-mail me, and i will take the time to respond.

Longer range that cannot be reached by charging someone or distance attacks such as guns, bows, thrown weapons.
Charge range (running at someone and kicking, punching,"flying" attacks, tackling, etc)
Long range: Bats, chains, or possible a long kick
Medium Range: Punches, most kicks, some locks, etc.
Short Range: Some punches, elbows, knees, low kicks, some traps, some locks.
Close Range: Cinch, elbows, some punches, headbutts, stand up grappling, traps, holds, locks, etc.
Ground games (mount, guard, side, etc. etc.).
Depth attacks
Width attacks
Height Attacks
Combinations (hitting in threes, 4s, 2s, etc).
Parries, blocks, avoidance/dodges, counters
Footwork, stance, moving, mobility, sprawl (a defense)
Various strikes with the limbs (ie hands, elbow, forearm, shoulder, foot = instep, heel, etc.)
Conditioning, length of the fight
Environment: Conditions such as ring, street, grass, hill, other people around, laws, weapons near by, weather (raining, sunny, snow, etc.)
Reinforcements... will there be any.
Fighting is a liquid situation where ranges change often and move between ranges. Being able to adapt and use your strengths is key.

Traditional Martial Art have weapons. that allow you to be remote from the opponent.eg Long Bo, bow and arrow, throwing knives
Conversation Range -
This is a very misundestood range and not practiced very much - extensively used by the "Bully" or "Sneaky Fighter" - wanna learn this? - be aware of your surroundings and ask a question just before you come into the next range - Whats the time? Got a cigarette? You talking to me? - Just as they try to aswer - hit em!
Kicking range -

Punching Range -
Thai, Karate, JKD
Trapping Range -
JKD, Whin Chun
TakeDown Range -
College Wrestling, Judo, BJJ, Catch
Grappling/Floorwork
BJJ, SubWrestlng
